In 1968 the President of Kirra surfriders Club, Paul Daley, took me along to an AsAQ meeting at the Kirra Hotel. The meetings were held monthly and I for some reason never missed one. There was no reason for a 13yearold grom to be at the meetings. Id never even entered a state Championship, but I was reigning Kirra Cadet Champion and I would take my place a
professional surfing nearly a decade later. I clearly remember the organising that went into selecting and making travel arrangements for the 1969 Queensland Team to contest the Australian Titles at margaret river. Photos of big margs were displayed and I began dreaming of one day going to these places and riding these waves, and I couldnt wait for the next meeting and follow the progress of my heroes Peter Drouyn, The Neilsen Brothers, The Deane brothers and Kirras Graham Black, as well as cham

Joel Parkinsons emotional victory at Pipeline completed a tremendous 12 months following Stephanie Gilmore claiming her fifth Womens World Title in July, followed by Jack Freestone and Nikki Van Dijk winning the World Junior Titles in Bali in October. Parkinsons memorable day at Pipe was one of the most anticipated World Titles for many years. He has travelled to the North Shore 12 times and finished second in the World Title race four times 2002, 2004, 2009, 2011 twice to Andy Irons and once t
standstill. He could do little as the chasing pack cut his ratingswinning lead before good mate Mick Fanning snatched the World Title at Pipeline in the final event. The following year Parkinson was just happy to paddle out and simply stand on his surfboard after a nasty gash to his heel while surfing at Snapper Rocks threatened to end his career.
