It was 1920 when swimming gold medal winner Duke Kahanamoku, the man who introduced surfing to Australians, asked the International Olympic Committee to include it in the program. In the midnineties the International Surfing Association and its Chairman Fernando Aguerre campaigned vigorously for a place at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Like the Dukes earlier attempt, this latest bid also failed as did Surfing Australias campaigning to have surfing at least included as a demonstration sport. Decisions arent made overnight. The campaign to win inclusion can take upwards of five years. The decision on new sports is then made at the International Olympic Committee IOC Session sev

I think the international growth of surfing as a sport is building its own momentum and the IOC in the years to come wont be able to ignore our sport, Stark says. Surfing is a truly international sport, we have iconic global heroes in our sport, but obviously barriers in our sport are around some of the count

I believe the vote will always be difficult, because of the scarcity of the spots available for new sports, and the large number of applicants, Aguerre says. Also, its quite clear, that new applicants face tougher challenges than sports already in the Games. What I mean is that, if the Games did not exist until today, and were cre

Obviously there are hurdles surfing faces not least the availability of the waves, but if they can make all that happen then itd be a fabulous opportunity.
