20 Ti m es ... Fourtime World Surfing Champion Mark Richards has seen it all in surfing. From his days as a grommet catching his first wave, through his tremendous professional career including the World Titles from 197982 and now as one of the sports elder statesmen, Marks observations on the state of the sport are always timely and thought provoking. He recently took part in two significant events for Surfing Australia the launch of VEGEMITE SurfGroms and the Turning of the Soil ceremony to
I joke a lot of the time I won four World Titles fuelled by a diet of soft drink and chocolate and thats not very far from the truth. Mark, did you ever envisage a program like VEGEMITE SurfGroms being introduced during your early days in the sport When I first started surfing there were hardly any people in the water. I was born in 57 and was very lucky that both my Mum and Dad surfed and that was my introduction to surfing. I think that was the way you got into surfing back then it was via a M
Can you remember your first wave as a grommet It was a total disappointment. I learnt to surf on a rubber surferplane. I got a small one when I was about three and a bigger one each year at Christmas. The first board I had was made by Gordon Woods in Sydney. They used the front and back of a blank as most boards back then were about 10ft long so they had two offcuts and joined them together to make a little six footer. It was red with a white GT stripe on one side. The first surf was at Blacksmi
How do you think being exposed to the work at the High Performance Centre would have helped your career At a lot of the events I surfed in I actually ran out of gas halfway through the event. I used to hate events where the quarters, semis and finals would be run on the same day because I would just run out of energy. If I was trying to get to the final, a lot of the time Id be gone by the semis. I used to love the events where youd only surf once a day and then theyd call it off because the win

O W W FA R E C IG N T H FI T LE The best piece of advice I received was to always have fun and always challenge yourself. Keep it simple. Always with Owen Wright it has been a matter of when and not if. And it has always been fairly clear it would only be a short wait for that when. SURFING THINKS OUTSIDE THE BOX Gone are the days when training for surfing simply meant a few hours of paddling and a trip to the bakery. For elite surfing hopefuls a whole new world of biomechanics, physiology, nutrition and diet awaits them. Were not aware of anyone who has been able to take the Australian Institute of Sport approach to surfing and that is exactly what we have done. Jeremy, a surfer walks in asking for help and a bit of an edge to take his surfing to a new level, what is the next step I do an athletic development profile. You are also developing an athletic development pathway, explain how that will work The pathway goes from foundation, to emerging, to preelite to the elite stage and there are athletic competencies that should be achieved at each stage. Basically similar to what Martin Martin Dunn Surfing Australia National Coaching Director has done technically and tactically, so I have said for the surfers this is what you need to be able to demonstrate physically and demonstrate nutritionally at stages throug
You have many of the surfers doing gymnastic activities. It might seem quite strange for someone walking off the street and seeing a bunch of surfers doing rolls and twists and jumping on trampolines etc and wonder how all that is supposed to benefit a surfer riding a wave. Gymnastics really helps because it requires balance and coordination. Gymnastics is a moving environment, surfing is a moving environment. So its all very well and good to stand on a Swiss ball, theres nothing wrong with that
